On Tuesday, Joe Biden has selected his running mate Senator of California Kamala Harris as Vice Presidential Candidate. After that, Kamala Harris becomes the first black woman and Indian American to have a presidential ticket from either of the major US party.
Who is Kamala Harris?
During his announcement, Joe Biden “former Vice President” entitled Kamala as “fearless fighter”, after that Harris tweeted that Biden “can unify the American people because he’s spent his life fighting for us. And as president, he’ll build an America that lives up to our ideals.”
She further added, “I’m honored to join him as our party’s nominee for Vice President, and do what it takes to make him our Commander-in-Chief,”
She was born and raised in Oakland, California. Harris spent her childhood in Northern California as well as Montreal, Canada. Her mother “Dr. Shyamala Gopalan, a cancer researcher” was also from Montreal, where she taught at McGill University. Sherlock Season 5 Release Date
Kamala Harris Is Joe Biden’s Running Mate
In her memoir, “The Truth We Hold” she wrote, My mother understood very well that she was raising two black daughters, She knew that her adopted homeland would see Maya and me as black girls, and she was determined to make sure we would grow into confident, proud black women.” According to The Washington Post.
After completing her law school in San Francisco, she attends Howard University where she was also a member of Alpha Kappa Sorority.
Once Harris told The New York Times, the thing that inspired her to become a prosecutor is that she is, “a child of community that was often on the not-great end of law enforcement, in terms of profiling and abuse”.
“And the decision I made was, ‘I’m going to try and go inside the system, where I don’t have to ask permission to change what needs to be changed,” she further added. Since childhood, it was her dream to become a lawyer.
What are her weaknesses?
According to the SF Gate, when she asked what she wants to become, she replied “A lawyer”, “They were the heroes growing up. They were the architects of the civil rights movement. I thought that that was the way you do good things and serve and achieve justice. It was pretty simple.”
From 2004 to 2011, Harris was a San Francisco District Attorney and then from 2011 to 2017, she was a California Attorney General. After that, she becomes a California Senator.
Even after having a great voting record in the Senate, she has been criticized time-to-time during her time as a prosecutor. At which she said that she doesn’t have any regrets for starting a career as a prosecutor.
In an interview with The New York Times, she said, “I don’t regret it because I know we were able to make a change, but it certainly was not enough,”
In a video on Twitter on March 18 she said that she was supporting Biden “with great enthusiasm.” According to NBC News, She also shared that, she and Biden’s son Beau was very close friends. We used to talk multiple times in a day when he was Delaware attorney and I was California attorney. Biden’s son Beau died in 2015 after suffering from brain cancer.
In a Times Interview Harris said, “reimagin[ing] what public safety looks like, funding public schools, affordable housing, increased homeownership, job skill development, jobs, access to capital for those who want to start small businesses, or who are running small businesses in communities”.
